Paul Gareau

Paul L. Gareau is a Ph.D. candidate in Religious Studies with a specialisation in Canadian Studies at the University of Ottawa, Canada. His main doctoral research has been to investigate, through fieldwork, the rise and significance of Catholic evangelisation culture in Canada, and its connection and impact on youth. His research interests also involve religious conservatism and gender, the discursive impact of historiography on identity, and investigating the place and particular manifestation of religion in the Métis-Metis aboriginal community, both in the historical and contemporary context.

Religious Providence for Religious Action: Investigating Roger Allen Laporte’s French-Canadian Catholic Heritage

I wish to deepen the discussion by investigating the discursive link and importance Catholic Ultramontanism played in constructing French-Canadian/Franco-American identity on both sides of the Canada/US border. In the early morning hours of November 9th 1965, a 22 year old Catholic man from upstate New York named Roger Allen Laporte self-immolated in front of the United Nations in New York City as a strong political protest against the Vietnam War.
